Joe Merrett2 Sep 2024 - 19:15

Important info for all parents ahead of the new season

We deliver hockey coaching from ages 6 to 18 for players of all standards. We guide and inspire our young players along a hockey pathway, from age group matches, integrating into adult training (from age 13) then onwards to senior league hockey.

We expect all our young players to come along wanting to have fun, be engaged, be well behaved, want to be part of a team and learn hockey skills.

Training is on Sunday mornings in 2 sessions that run from September to early April.

U8 (Yr 2 & 3) also known as “The Minis”
Introduction to hockey skills and team play. Fun, energetic sessions to build the foundations of hockey.
Held on the center of the pitch under lead coaches Jono Rose & Jamie Osmond

U10 (Yr 4 & 5)
Focus on Hockey skills and techniques, match play scenarios and teamwork.

4 x Festivals (friendlies) held at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex and an end of season tournament. 7 a side mixed (boys and girls) team with goalie. U14 (Yr 8 & 9) U16 (Yr 10 & 11)
For the older age groups, we focus more on game play scenarios, positional understanding, tactics, team work and fitness.

U14 will be on the left of the pitch under lead coach Joe Merrett
U16 will be on the right of the pitch under lead coach Matt Longsdale.

These age groups combine in matches against other clubs in the Bristol Badgers league, full 11 aside games, mixed (boys and girls) with a goalie.
Selection will be based on ability, training attendance, training effort and player confidence.

The more confident and competent players can also participate in adult training (Tuesday evenings) and our development adult teams. We assess readiness on an individual basis and involve parents in any decisions to move them up to make sure everyone is comfortable and we have open lines of communication to monitor progress and provide any required support.

Training Format & kit

1 hour sessions led by DBS checked, experienced players and representatives of the club.

All juniors that come to training must wear hockey shin pads, gum shields, bring a drink and wear appropriate clothing for the weather. We do not recommend football shin pads as they are not substantial enough for hockey related impact. We have a partnership with the Sport Shop in Portishead High Street who can help you with hockey specific equipment.

Club clothing for our juniors is available from Logoworks in Congresbury. [url=https://www.logo-works.co.uk/North-Somerset-Hockey-Club-c30512025]
Club kit is green shirt, black shorts/skorts and black socks (new for 24/25 season, previously green). Kit is required for training and all matches. Hoodies, coats and hats are also available.

If any parents want a hoodie then email them and they can do adult sizes also.

Coaching Sessions and times may change due to weather conditions and matches. All registrations, payments, availability and communications are through the Pitchero app. All parents and children must be registered, this includes medical information and emergency contact details.

Our junior membership subscriptions cost £100 for the season (approx 25 sessions). The fee is split into two payments, the first in mid September and the second in January.

What is our ask of you as a parent?

Our coaches are all volunteers and give up a lot of their time preparing sessions, communicating with parents and delivering sessions to your children. All we ask is the below basic courtesies to ensure their energy is spent delivering an engaging hockey experience for your children. We are very receptive to feedback so please raise any, both positive and developmental this with your coach.

Ensure your child arrives 5 mins before their session. Late arrival is very disruptive to delivering coaching and your child may be asked to sit out until there is an appropriate time to join the session.

All communications will be sent through the club’s website provider Pitchero. You must keep your and your child details updated on the Pitchero app as this is our source for emergency contact details. Please ensure you have notifications enabled and agree to email communications. We will also communicate through the North Somerset Hockey Club Facebook page so please ensure you follow this also.

Keep your child availability up to date on Pitchero.

If your child has any medical conditions then please let your lead coach know before participating.

We play on an all weather pitch so unless the weather is really bad we will be training.
We ask parents of our younger age groups (under 12) to be present at training. For the older groups, we expect you to be within 10 mins distance

In the unlikely event of any accidents, we can administer basic first aid however will not be able to transport your children to any emergency medical treatment.

New starters
We have a collection of sticks to borrow to support any new starters wanting to try the game.

For new members the first two sessions are free so your child can try it. We ask that parents stay in attendance during these sessions in our undercover spectator area. If you would like to continue and join the club then please register on Pitchero. Subs will be prorated if joining mid season. https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/northsomersethockeyclub/signup
