Club History
North Somerset Hockey Club was formed in 1997 from a merger between Brean & Portishead Hockey Clubs. Both Brean and Portishead achieved various levels of success with Brean reaching the dizzy heights of national league hockey in the late 1980’s. Both clubs started to experience a reduction in playing numbers in the late 90’s, and were brought together to form North Somerset.
Based in Portishead, North Somerset Hockey Club draws players from throughout the area including Weston-super-Mare and Bristol.
Where We Are Now
Currently, the club runs 3 Men's teams, 2 Ladies teams, and a Men's Veterans team. With close links with Gordano Comprehensive School we have a successful youth development programme in place. Our good governance was recognised in 2019 with the coveted Sport England/England Hockey Clubmark award.
A successful 2019/20 season saw the Men’s 1s promoted to the Verde Recreo Hockey League Championship and the Ladies 1s comfortably retain their West Women’s Hockey League Central Division status. The other sides play in lower leagues allowing the club to cater for all standards and develop young players.
Thanks in part to a significant Hockey Foundation Grant secured by the Club, the 2020/21 season sees a new high quality pitch at Gordano School.
We pride ourselves on our reputation as a sociable and friendly club, and we are always on the lookout for new players regardless of age or experience.
